'Your Tour' Tescani, Romania, 1-21 August 2009
Each individual has a different way of perceiving the reality surrounding them in a unique way, and that is partly due to that person’s background and life experiences. The reason why we all perceive things differently is simply because we all have and translate life experiences in a unique equation which cannot be repeated. This equation only exists one time, which is usually random, and that same equation makes the humans individual and exquisite, as much as the DNA formula and the finger prints.
I am interested in the way people perceive the physical space surrounding them. When we are little, everything around us seems quite big. When we grow up we appreciate the spaces which are more familiar, or emphasise the rooms or space which is more relevant to our pleasures, activity, or interests. In order to explore this idea, I have proposed a project which did actively take place in three weeks of residency at Tescani in August 2009.
The reason for exploring this idea is the fact that we never get the same views on anything in life, even when you talk to people with similar opinions or background.
During my stay at Tescani I digitally recorded tours of the building the ten artists in residence inhabited, and I responded to these personalised tours with experimental paintings which portrayed the diversity of perceptions in people who took part. The three main paintings were based on real maps scaled 1:2500, 1:500 and 1:100. On each map a colour coordinated track was marked to correspond to each individual who was previously interviewed.
