Home/Acasa Project 2007-2009

Home/Acasa Project was a collaborative project, led by Gabriela and Valentin Boiangiu between 2007 and 2009. This became an opportunity to reflect on the notion of 'home' (the translation in Romanian being acasa); a notion which may be close to everybody's heart, but especially for the two artists as they identified as immigrants in the UK, living a life of constant reflection on the notion of belonging and the domestic environment which became a hybrid space of living, creating and social or ethnic identity.

Supported by the Arts Council, The Romanian Cultural Institute and the Ratiu Family Foundation, this project travelled to different locations in the UK and Romania, making necessary bridges between cultures and communities especially through some active participation with local audiences.
Exhibition locations: Gallery 2, Bradford, Leeds Art Gallery, Art Museum, Craiova, Gallery HTT03, Bucharest, Dean Clough Galleries, Halifax.

'Although the addresses and postmarks identify places of separation, the exchange of letters enacts connection between Bucuresti and Bradford, Craiova and Shipley. The Romanian and English of the handwriting signifies ‘family’ and sometimes identifies specific individuals. The stamps reveal particular aspects of HOME – of Romãnia – the myths, folklore, historic buildings, and fruits, as well as the airliners that speed reunion, and from whose windows the land of HOME can be glimpsed as though through clouds. This sensation is intimated by the distinctive way that the artists reproduce or replicate letters (entire, crumpled or in fragments) within layers of media to suggest aerial views or maps of town and countryside.'
